Buffy 1.1 - Welcome to the Hellmouth, 1.2 - The Harvest

1/16 picture

Welcome to the Hellmouth
"In every generation, there is a chosen one. She alone will stand against the vampires, the demons, and the forces of darkness. She is the slayer."

I will not blog them all, but thought jotting down some highlights from the first set might be fun, especially since I didn't watch them in order the first time. If I had, the first scene might had sold me on it. I think I'll try not to include spoilers in these comments (or at least to spoiler block them, though it will be best to watch before reading if you intend to watch), but let's just say it's characteristically fantastic. I recognized the actress, but if I hadn't, it would have been a great surprise.

PS: SPOILERS! I mean, it's been 16 years, tho.

Buffy's first meeting with -- aww, Principle Flutie. We hardly knew ye.

Classic exchange:
Giles - Into each generation, a slayer is born. One girl in all the world - a chosen one. One born with the strength and skill--

Buffy: --to hunt the vampires. To stop the spread of their evil blah blah blah...

And I'm not sure I remembered, or even knew how it was that the Scoobies began to find out. Xander really just overheard all that?

Funniest line of the ep: "Come on, this is Sunnydale - how bad an evil can there be?"

And heeeeeeere's Angel. God, he was so young (I guess they all were). And "dark and gorgeous in an annoying sort of way." Good thing Buffy "really didn't like him."

Ah, The Bronze.

The first episode is full of hero and superhero tropes - secret identity slip ups, reluctance, need to train. It will be fun to watch how those are played with in more and less serious ways over the run of the show.

I wonder if tonight's crypt is the same one that will later become Spike's home. I think it is.

Wow, quite the cliffhanger for the first ep., and not one I really remember. Hero-to-be gets her ass beat, which is, I'm sure, part of what galvanizes her into training. I do remember scary disciple vampire, though I had forgotten the disciplehood.

The Harvest
"This world is older than any of you know. Contrary to popular mythology, it did not begin as a paradise."

The second ep. brings more cryptic Angel, which I now remember annoyed me a lot. Oh, but not as much as Harmony, who just showed up.

And this scene reminds me that the extent to which Buffy was super powered did not stay consistent (in typical superhero fashion). Can she bend metal, or does she just recover quickly from injuries.

I love that this vampire has better hair and clothes, despite the fact that other vampire was recognizable by bad clothes.

Wait, I'm sorry - didn't she specifically say there was no cover at The Bronze on Friday? So why is the bouncer counting money? So confused.

Funniest line of the ep: "Ladies and gentleman, there is no cause for alarm. Actually, there is cause for alarm, it just won't do any good."

Second funniest line: "Next."

You can tell this is from several years ago, because there's a lot of biting, and no blood.

Also a nice line: "Degradation most holy. What - no volunteers?"

This ep. also features one of my favorite shots of Buffy. After much flipping and fighting and couple of zingers, the battle is done and Buffy gets a great transition shot, from pensive to resolute in badassery.
