Fledgling by Octavia E. Butler

This started off really promising - immediately engrossing and effectively creepy. And then the squick kicked in. Now, the story pulled me along enough in its early stages that I thought I might both still enjoy it and find enough substance in it to teach past the squick, but it did not, in my opinion, stay strong enough to balance that aspect out. Towards the end, it felt rushed, heavy on the action, slight/clumsy on the race, identity, and free will, and heavier on the titillation through sex with child-like vampire than really felt necessary to me. So, while I thought it was pretty good and wanted to know how the story ended, I neither enjoyed it as much as I'd hoped nor feel compelled to teach it. Will probably have better luck with the Parable books, but was hoping the less obvious choice would pan out.
